I had always dreamed of having my own K5LA, but never thought it was possible. I did what I thought was impossible in November I was then the new owner of a used K5LA. I restored it and got it looking and sounding sweet. I then accomplished another goal: having a complete train horn setup on my Dodge Ram pickup.

I wouldn''t suggest this for everyone to do, as it is something that requires lots of restraint. My main reason for having this on my truck is because it is a great mobile horn testing setup.

Due to my rebuilding of horns for collectors and shortline railroads, I have the need to go out into the country to really test out a horn. On the fun side of things, I used to blow my horns at the local high school's football games when the team scored.

I was asked to do this by the principal and the head of the athletics department! My truck is rigged up with a 60 Gallon air reciever that I bought from Ingersoll-Rand, and a custom built horn rack that was modeled after my friend, Doc Bryant's setup by a local welding shop. The top plate on my rack is aluminum so it wont rust and I dont have to worry about painting it. The H3 had three chimes, and the H5 five chimes. This is the horn that Bentor had Swanson modify to A 7th major from C diminished 7th.

The H5 and N3 were evolved into the superior M-series horns. M standing for "Modulation" Both the 3-chime and the 5-chime had all power chambers on an even plane, and the M5 eliminated the air tubing, instead using a manifold that internally supplied the air to all 5 or 3 bells. The M5 is still to this day considered by historians and collectors as the most musical of all locomotive air horns.

I work just north of SP's old Taylor Yard in Los Angeles, and do not have a window view of the tracks, so basically I have to go outside and run a little to see the trains go by. The reason I ask is because I cannot always leave my desk, or sometimes I just dont feel like going out if its just going to be another set of UP SD70Ms.

Its easy to know when a Metrolink or Amtrak is coming by their distinct horns, but for the freights, I really dont know. As far as the rest of the UP units, theres just way too many different tones, old or new units. My goal would be to know what foreign power what i'm always excited to see would sound like but thats kind of difficult finding that out over an internet forum, so basically I'm just looking for any advice that any of you might have to share.

CalPoly, Seems like you and me are in the minority. I'm a big fan of locomotive horns myself. Railroads tend to favor certain horns and include this in their motive power purchasing practices.

Most horns today are 3 chimers and 5 chimers. The two major horn manufacturers today are Leslie and Nathan. Appearance-wise: Leslie's are slender and long while most Nathan's are short and "stubby" in comparison. Leslie was the dominant manufacturer for years, but Nathan seems to have higher had sales of locomotiove horns since the late s.

Intended as a replacement for the popular P-series of airhorns, they featured two diaphragms per bell and operated efficiently on much less air pressure.

They produce a superharmonicof over twelve octavesalso stirring up "ghost harmonics". Swanson also employed super-catenoid bell flaresbalancing and perfecting this horn to an even higher degree than anything else on the railroad. However, they are not quieter, they are actually louder. The K3H, on the other hand, had three bells - numbers KS-1 through 3.

It played a D-sharp minor triad DFA. Due to defects in manufacturing, some K3H's had an odd KS-2 bell that played a G, making a pleasant major triad.

Inthe Federal Railroad Administration posted a law stating that all locomotive horns must not only have a minimum volume, but also a maximum. Seemingly in response to this new regulation, AirChime began production of two more five-chime horns for new locomotives.

Oddly, the K5HL is usually mounted backwards, with four of the bells facing the rear of the locomotive. They were sandcast and sounded mellow, very close to a steam whistle which is what Robert Swanson originally intended. Many of these horns played notes that were close to the intended and also not. Wide Front Horns usually play flat notes, but sound very sharp. Narrow Front Horns started production in and were distinguished by the on the backcaps. A lot of the Narrow Front horns play chords similar to the Wide Front but as time went on they started to sound harsher.

However newer Backcaps were made with a similar design to the older style Backcaps before the Wide Front design. Raised Letter Horns are also designed to play the intended notes of the horns they were meant to play originally. Some have said there is an FRA regulation mandating Raised Letter horns on the belief that unpleasant-sounding horns get more attention.

When a K5H is built with a low-profile manifold, it's known as a K5L. Such a setup is very rare, however, since most railroads that use the K5LA have height restrictions that limit usage of high-profile horns. This is due to an unintended error in manufacturing, but does not affect the volume or efficiency of the horn. K-series bells can be reversed on the manifold, allowing the horn to be used for back-up movements.

Earlier in the series' production, K-horns were available with adjustable "MKS" bells, allowing the operator to change the pitch if desired. This option affected the reliability of the horns somewhat and was soon phased out. In fact, the K5H sound sample above is an example of such a horn, tuned perfectly to the chord of D min6.

It sounds no different from a standard K5H. When the K-series started out, the horns were cast in sand molds, making a very smooth, almost clarinet-like, sound. Later on, the sand molds were phased out in favour of the more efficient die-cast method.

This affected the sound greatly, making the horns louder and more aggressive-sounding. This did not change the pitches of the bells, however, unlike what happened to the P-series. The horn has five bells spread across two manifolds - a standard K3LA with bells KS-1, 2, and 4A, but also an odd two-chime horn with bells KS-3 and 5. The horn is known by railfans as the 'hybrid K5LA', and can also be found on some of Amtrak's Genesis fleet.
